Parker Hannifin Powder Characterization Lab
Characterization of metal powders to be used in the additive manufacturing process is fundamental to developing consistent and reputable components. Procedures that were applicable in powder metallurgy are not always optimal for additive manufacturing, thus requiring unique standards that are crucial for a printed part. Quality control after atomization, transportation, and additive manufacturing processing for reuse or disposal calls for several instruments. Commitment between Parker Hannifin and ASM International to increase knowledge and education on the rapidly growing industry generated a new lab devoted to the characteristics vital for quality builds.
To understand particle size distribution (PSD), the lab features a Horiba LA-960 laser particle size analyzer; to understand PSD with morphology information, there is a Retsch Technology CAMSIZER X2. Flow rate and apparent density are traditionally measured with a Hall/Carney funnel, supplemented with flowability energy and tapped density data from the Freeman Technology FT4 universal flow tester. Data yielded from the robust FT4 Powder Rheometer also helps understand how powder properties are influenced by dynamic flow, bulk, and shear conditions. Metal powders can be further characterized throughout ASM’s facilities for bulk chemistry via elemental analyzers, density via a CT Scanner, and porosity via an SEM.
ASM is invested in educating different safety measures necessary when working with powder metals. The Powder Characterization Lab operates as a cleanroom for trained ASM personnel, complete with full grounding of equipment and surfaces to eliminate ignition sources for metal powders. Our vacuum system and safety measures follow NFPA and DHA guidelines. Operators undergo conductivity testing prior to opening powder and are gowned with ESD footwear and gloves, flame-resistant lab coats, and PAPR helmets. Safety measures and instrument operation are demonstrated in Powder Metallurgy for Additive Manufacturing.
