TSS Members Receiving ASM Fellow in 2025
In 1969, ASM established the Fellow of the Society honor to provide recognition to members for their distinguished contributions to materials science and engineering and to develop a broadly based forum of technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the society. ASM will recognize the 2025 Class of Fellows at the Annual Awards Banquet held during IMAT’25, on Tuesday, October 21st, in Detroit, MI. Tickets can be purchased with IMAT registration.
The following are the members recognized by their colleagues for 2025. Additional Fellows may be elected to this distinguished body in subsequent years. The solicited guidance, which the Fellows will provide, will enhance the capability of ASM as a technical community of materials science and engineering in the years ahead.
Prof. Antonello Astarita, FASM
Professor of Manufacturing
University of Naples “Federico II”
Napoli, Italy
“For mentoring students and young faculty. Successful collaborations between industry & academia, and contributed at various ASM chapters, and strong level of participation in journal leadership and publications.”

Dr. Jan Cizek, FASM
Associate Professor
Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences
Prague, Czech Republic
“For pioneering research contributions to the fundamental science of thermal and cold spray, their applications in nuclear fusion and biomedical field, and dedicated education of students and young researchers in the materials field.”

Statement of Novelty Now Required for JTST Submissions
The Journal of Thermal Spray Technology (JTST) has introduced a new requirement for authors when submitting to the journal beginning in 2026. When submitting a manuscript, authors will be asked to provide a Statement of Novelty. This statement will be required for Original Research Articles, Review Papers, and Perspective Papers and will be peer reviewed by experts in the field.
The intent of the statement is to convince the editors and reviewers that the manuscript is relevant and novel with respect to the existing literature (including the author’s own published work) and state-of-the-art. The Statement of Novelty should be concise (about 100 words or less) and should not repeat what is already in the Abstract or the Introduction. It will be included in the manuscript document after the Abstract and before the Keywords or Introduction and will also be part of the accepted, published article. Examples of novelty statements can be found here: https://rdcu.be/eYbUn. Please contact Cristina Formichelli ([email protected]) with any questions.
The Statement of Novelty workflow is now live on JTST‘s ScholarOne Manuscripts website under step one of the submission process. The editorial team of the journal believes this will be a way to ensure that the quality and timeliness of JTST articles will continue to improve and ensure the journal is a vital resource for the thermal spray community.
Call for Papers for Special Issue of Journal of Thermal Spray Technology
The Journal of Thermal Spray Technology (JTST) will publish a special issue on Laser Surface Engineering. The relevance of laser-based technologies in surface engineering applications has grown considerably in recent years. Innovation in existing processes has led to an increasingly widespread industrial uptake, and new methods are developing continuously. This special issue aims to highlight the latest advancements in research and applications in laser surface engineering, including but not limited to laser cladding, laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED), and laser remelting.
Dr. Katy Voisey (United Kingdom), Prof. Cheng-Xin Li (China), Dr. Filofteia-Laura Toma (Germany), and Prof. Barbara Previtali (Italy) will serve as guest editors.
Interested authors are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract to Dr. Voisey ([email protected]), Prof. Li ([email protected]), Dr. Toma ([email protected]), and Prof. Previtali ([email protected]) for consideration and comments before the preparation of a full manuscript.
Abstract submissions are due by November 14. For more information, please visit here.
