Heat Treat Lab
The Heat Treat Lab demonstrates the application of the Iron Carbon Equilibrium Diagram and how controlled heating and cooling of materials influences their properties. Two Lindberg furnaces are used to treat samples used in the metallography courses (steel, basics, and advanced). A Tocco induction unit for selective hardening is used to demonstrate a martensitic transformation, as seen in the Basics of Heat-Treating education course.
A Solar Manufacturing vacuum furnace, donated during ASM’s 100th year anniversary in 2013, offers students hands-on experiences with vacuum treating, brazing, sintering, hardening, stress relieving, normalizing, annealing, tempering, homogenizing, degassing, diffusion bonding, and creep forming. Demonstrations of the heat-treating equipment are seen in Vacuum Heat Treating education course. For information on our education courses, please visit asminternational.org/exploreeducation.
