Parker Hannifin Computed Tomography Lab
The establishment of ASM’s Materials Solutions Network (MSN) catalyzed ASM’s interest in driving innovation and advancing knowledge in the processes of additive manufacturing. Partnership with Parker Hannifin, MSN’s founding member, and Nikon, initiated the Parker Hannifin Computed Tomography lab, complete with a 225 kV microfocus X-ray source Industrial CT Scanner.
In preparation of large-scale production, additive manufactured metal parts are evaluated as powder prior to printing and as solid parts after. The CT scanner takes x-rays at different angles, yielding thousands of 3D images that are reconstructed. Analysis looks at porosity, density, shape, and size. Interchangeable focus sources allow for scans of a wide variety of materials and part sizes.
The CT lab also houses an Olympus confocal microscope. The use of a 405 nm violate laser allows the microscope to act as a non-contact profilometer for shape and surface roughness at the submicron scale. Olympus is working closely with ASM’s Education team to advance the confocal’s role in material science.
The Parker Hannifin CT Lab is equipped with the following:
| Olympus | Nikon |
| LEXT OLS5000 Laser Confocal Microscope | XT H 225 ST Industrial CT Scanner |
