Sales Tax Exemptions

Are your purchases exempt from sales tax in your state?

Sales Tax Exemptions
Organizations are issued sales tax exemption certificates on a state-by-state basis that is granted through a state’s application process. Sales tax exemption is typically applied for in each state that an organization has goods and services delivered. For more information about applying for sales tax exemption, you should visit the states sales and use tax website.

Providing your Certificate to ASM International
ASM International uses Avalara CertCapture to capture and manage our customer’s exemption certificates.  To provide ASM with your organization’s valid state exemption certificate, please follow this link: CertCapture Express. Make sure you have the information you need available based on your state of exemption before beginning the process.  You will not be able to start a certificate, save your progress, and then return at a later time to complete.

Once you have provided a certificate, ASM’s Finance Department will review and validate the certificate in CertCapture within 1-3 business days. If immediate action is required, please contact our Member Services team. Once validated, your organization’s purchase will be exempt from sales tax within the state(s) provided. If your certificate is rejected, the ASM Finance Department will contact you.

My organization provided a valid exemption certificate. Why was my purchase taxed?

  • The goods and/or services purchased were delivered in a different state than your organization’s approved exemption state.
  • The certificate provided is expired and needs to be updated. Please contact our member services team.
  • State law has changed and the item(s) you purchased is no longer exempt under your certificate.

My organization has an exemption certificate that is accepted by multiple states. How do I provide it to ASM?

  • This is called a Multi-State Jurisdictional Exemption and is an agreed upon standard between several states but not all. Follow the instructions provided above on this webpage to provide your organization’s certificate. ASM’s finance department will mark all states identified on the certificate in CertCapture.

My organization is a 501c(3) or other type of not for profit. Why are my purchases taxed?

  • Being a 501c(3) or other type of not for profit does not automatically make your organization exempt from state sales and use tax. An organization must apply for and be granted exemption from sales and use tax based on each state’s laws.

I have memberships and subscriptions with other organizations that are not taxed. Why are my ASM dues/fees being taxed?

  • Due to ASM’s economic footprint in multiple states, membership count, education conferences, and dynamic products/services. ASM has reached Economic Nexus thresholds set by states. As these thresholds are reached, ASM is required to register in the state as a sales tax collector and begin charging/collecting tax from its customers.
