ASM, EDFAS, FAS, HTS, IMS, SMST and TSS Seek Student Board Member Programs

We’re looking for Material Advantage student members to provide insights and ideas to the ASM, EDFAS, FAS, HTS, IMS, SMST, and TSS Boards!

We are pleased to announce the continuation of the successful ASM, EDFAS, FAS, HTS, IMS, SMST, and TSS Student Board Member Programs. Each Society values the input and participation of students and is looking for their insights and ideas.

Requirements

Eligibility

  • Attend four (4) Board meetings
  • July 27-28, 2026 – ASM Headquarters, Ohio
  • Sep. 30, 2026 – Quebec City, CA at IMAT ’26
  • Spring 2027
  • Summer 2027
  • Review, organize, and execute projects aimed at student engagement including DomesDay.
  • Term begins June 1, 2026

You must be a Material Advantage undergraduate or graduate student member during the 2026-2027 academic year.

  • Attend one (1) Board meeting
  • Fall 2026
  • Participate in three (3) teleconferences
  • Term begins October 1, 2026

You must be an undergraduate or graduate student member during the 2026-2027 academic year with an interest in the field of failure analysis for the electronic/semiconductor industry.

  • Attend one (1) Board meeting
  • Fall 2026
  • Participate in three (3) teleconferences
  • Term begins October 1, 2026

You must be a Material Advantage undergraduate or graduate student member during the 2026-2027 academic year with an interest in the field of failure analysis.

  • Attend one (1) Board meeting
  • Fall 2026

You must be a Material Advantage undergraduate or graduate student member during the 2026-2027 academic year, studying or researching in an area closely related to the field of heat treating, metallurgy/materials science.

  • Attend one (1) Board meeting
  • Fall 2026
  • Participate in five (5) teleconferences
  • Term begins October 1, 2026

You must be a Material Advantage undergraduate or graduate student member during the 2026-2027 academic year, with an interest in the field of metallography, metallurgy/ materials science.

  • Attend one (1) Board meeting in North America (Spring 2026)
  • Participate in three (3) teleconferences
  • Receive a one-year complimentary membership in Material Advantage
  • Term begins October 1, 2026

You must be an undergraduate or graduate student during the 2026-2027 academic year, with an interest in the field of shape memory alloys.

  • Attend one (1) Board meeting in North America (Spring 2026)
  • Participate in three (3) teleconferences
  • Receive a one-year complimentary membership in Material Advantage
  • Term begins October 1, 2026

You must be an undergraduate or graduate student during the 2026-2027 academic year, studying or researching in an area closely related to the field of thermal spray technology.

How to Submit an Application

Your application package must include the following:

  1. Online Application Form

  2. Your current resume

  3. Indicate which board you are applying to ASM, EDFAS, FAS, HTS, IMS, SMST, or TSS, and select only one

  4. A two-page essay (typed and double-spaced) addressing your interest in participating in the program. Please be sure to address the following points:

    • What experiences led to your interest in this program?

    • What qualities, characteristics, and skills do you possess that will make you a strong candidate to serve as a student representative to the Board?

    • What do you hope to learn/gain from this program?

  5.  Provide 2-3 letters of recommendation (from faculty, peers, employers, etc.)

Selected ASM Board participants will be notified by June 1, 2027. Affiliate Society Board participants will be notified by June 30, 2027. Those selected will begin their non-renewal, non-voting term as a Student Board Member according to the schedule above.
