ASM Milestones
For more than a century, ASM International has been known for developing new products and services that meet the needs of its members and the materials community. Here are some of the major ASM milestones of the past 100+ years.
2023
Three ASM journals – Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention, Shape Memory and Superelasticity, and Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis – receive their first Impact Factors. With this achievement, all nine journals in ASM’s portfolio have Impact Factors.
2022
Sandy Robert, CAE, joins the ASM staff as the first woman Executive Director on January 1st. ASM launches the Data Ecosystem, AeroMat (ASM) and Aerotech (SAE) co-locate for the first time. The Henry Marion Howe Medal celebrates its 100th Anniversary; ASM Historical Landmark Award celebrates its 50th Anniversary.
2021
ASM Connect grows to over 5,000 engaged users and adds chapter websites allowing chapters to promote their events to the entire membership. ASM Connect enables the first technical discussion group (Residual Stress) to spin off into a technical committee. Article downloads for ASM Journals exceed 3.5 million per year.
2020
ASM’s first Handbook focused on additive manufacturing, Volume 24: Additive Manufacturing Processes, is published.
2019
ASM International receives significant proceeds from the sale of Granta Design Ltd. to Ansys, Inc. based on the investment made by the ASM board in 2000.
2017
ASM embarks on a three year journey coined “The Renewal”, this journey re-establishes many aspects of ASM that brought it to prominence while digitally transforming the way ASM delivers value to its members and member led companies.
2016
ASM laboratory renovation accomplished through strategic partnerships with manufacturers of SEM, and light microscopy, metallography, and mechanical testing equipment.
2015
ASM redesigns its flagship publication, Advanced Materials & Processes to enhance readability and visual appeal.
2014
ASM debuts a new brand platform, logo and identity.
2013
ASM celebrates its 100-year anniversary.
2012
Publication of 6 new ASM Technical Handbooks and the ASM Handbook, Volume 23: Materials for Medical Devices.
2011
Renovation of Materials Park is complete and ASM staff moves back to the historic dome.
2010
Renovation of Materials Park begins.
2009
New Corrosion Solutions Center and Energy Materials Center announced – first collaborative online database and networking products. Materials Park named to National Registry of Historic Places.
2008
ASM hosts second successful Materials & Medicine Summit with Cleveland Clinic.
2007
ASM becomes partner society in Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) annual conference and exposition.
2006
ASM hosts Materials & Medicine Summit with Cleveland Clinic, develops Mtrl initiative to serve the industrial design community and introduces the first online services based on the Integrated Enterprise.
2005
ASM Integrated Enterprise solution launched.
2004
Comprehensive approach to ASM strategic planning results in development and implementation of a successful, sustainable plan and International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST) joined ASM.
2003
ASM introduces Alloy Center Online.
2002
ASM Handbooks Online and ASM Online Training launched.
2001
American Council on Education recommends ASM courses for college credit.
2000
First ASM Materials Camp a success as ASM Materials Education Foundation hosts 30 high-school students for week of hands-on, lab-based learning.
ASM International invests in Granta Design Ltd., to support the growth and development of the company.
1999
ASM Materials Education Foundation rededicates Training Center. Eisenman Memorial Garden completed.
1998
Leading corporate supporters pledge $2 million in contributed equipment for a new, state-of-the-art Training Center at Materials Park and Electronic Device Failure Analysis Society (EDFAS) was formed.
1997
First ASM Materials Solutions Conference held as part of The Complete Metals & Materials Experience.
1996
Heat Treating Vision 2020 introduced.
1995
Vision 2001 strategy completed. First electronic product published.
1994
Thermal Spray Society (TSS) was formed as an affiliate society.
1993
Vision 2000 strategy focuses on member needs and electronic services.
1992
International Metallographic Society (IMS) joined ASM as the first affiliate society and International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST) was formed.
1991
One-millionth abstract published by Materials Information.
1988
First World Materials Congress held in Chicago. ASM membership reaches 53,000 with 280 chapters in 17 countries. Society observes 75th anniversary.
1986
Society name changes to ASM International.
1985
Advanced Materials & Processes inaugurated.
1983
New ASM Strategic Plan initiated, featuring focus on quality, materials and international.
1981
First Metals Week held. Data Program for Alloy Phase Diagrams initiated. Membership passes 50,000 level.
1978
Ninth Edition of Metals Handbook begins.
1977
Nine technical divisions established. Metals Engineering Institute enrolls 50,000th student.
1974
Inaugural ASM Heat Treating Conference/Workshop held.
1970
ASM membership passes the 40,000 mark with 165 chapters. First class of Fellows installed. First four technical divisions established.
1964
The first Western Metal and Tool Exposition and Conference (WESTEC) is presented.
1963
Society observes 50th anniversary with 35,000 members, 124 chapters.
1962
Member interest in materials other than metals first becomes apparent.
1961
Volume 1 of Metals Handbook, 8th Edition published.
1960
Full-scale operation of computerized information searching service announced.
1959
New World Headquarters at Metals Park (now Materials Park) completed.
1957
First educational courses offered for home study. Second World Metallurgical Congress held in Chicago. Eighth Edition of Metals Handbook (first multi-volume edition) begins.
1955
Pilot operation begins to determine feasibility of electronic searching of technical literature.
1954
Metals Engineering Institute established as educational arm of the society.
1951
First World Metallurgical Congress held in Detroit.
1945
Membership reaches 20,000.
1939
ASM membership surpasses 10,000.
1933
Society changes name to American Society for Metals (ASM).
1930
First issue of Metal Progress published. Membership reaches 6,000.
1929
First bound-edition of the ASST Handbook published. Inaugural Western Metal Congress and Exposition held in Los Angeles.
1923
First Handbook begins. Data sheets are furnished for loose-leaf binder; issued through 1928.
1922
Society’s first award, the Henry Marion Howe Medal, established.
1921
ASST membership grows to over 3,200 with 31 chapters.
1920
Two groups reunited. American Society for Steel Treating (ASST) becomes new name. Headquarters established in Cleveland. First issue of Transactions published.
1919
Chicago group secedes and forms American Steel Treaters Society. First Metal Show held in Chicago.
1918
Club becomes the Steel Treating Research Society. Membership reaches 1,250 as sections are established in Chicago and Cleveland.
1915
Organization becomes the Steel Treaters Research Club as technical members are admitted.
1913
Steel Treaters Club formed in Detroit with fewer than 20 members.
