This book describes the underlying concepts and practical methods for effective design, evaluation, and optimization of bulk working operations such as forging, rolling, and extrusion. The Handbook of Workability and Process Design includes updated content from a previous ASM publication (Workability Testing Techniques, 1984) as well as substantial new coverage in the areas of process design, numerical simulation, and computer-based modeling of testing and processing conditions.

Workability is a vital aspect of the processing of materials, having roots in both material behavior and process design. Whether a part can be produced by plastic deformation without cracking or the generation of other defects is of important economic consequence. Because of the complex nature of the workability of metals, there is no single test that can be used to evaluate it. Several laboratory tests have been developed that are useful in screening materials for workability, but in other instances, very specialized tests that are specific to the process are commonly used.

In contemplating this revision and update, the editors decided to expand the scope to incorporate process design, especially as influenced by FEM analysis. The chapters that describe the various workability tests continue true to the original intent of providing practical workability testing techniques that can be used by the inexperienced practitioner.

Includes 25 chapters organized into four major sections:

  • Introduction
  • Workability Testing Techniques
  • Process Design and Workability
  • Multidisciplinary Process Design and Optimization

The volume also includes a Reference Information section featuring tables summarizing typical flow stress data for steels and nonferrous alloys.

Shipping Charges

ASM International is proud to recognize UPS as our official courier. All items are shipped using UPS Ground Service for domestic service and UPS International for all other shipments. This allows us to provide our members and customers with the most economical, reliable and trackable shipping available on the market.

All orders of physical products (Books, DVD sets, etc.) include a shipping charge that is calculated based on weight and your geographic location. ASM International does receive a discount from UPS because of the volume of shipping we do and this discount is passed along to you directly.

Domestic shipments typically are received within 3-5 business days; international shipments take approximately 2-4 weeks depending on your specific location.

We are able to offer expedited shipping services on products that are shipped direct, should the need arise. Please contact the ASM International Member Service Center at 440-338-5151, ext. 0 or via email at [email protected] for more information.
