Vacuum Heat Treating, August 31-September 1, 2026

Event Date:

August 31, 2026

Event Time:

8:30 am

Event Location:

ASM International

This course provides the background and practical applications of vacuum furnace heat treating.  You will be introduced to the fundamentals of vacuum furnaces and related system components.  A complete understanding of vacuum measurement and vacuum pumping systems is needed to perform various vacuum heat-treating processes and will be reviewed.  You will leave with a practical understanding of vacuum technology as related to heat treating and it is a follow up to courses which cover the fundamental metallurgy of what happens when metals are heated and cooled.  This course will include hands on instruction utilizing the ASM Laboratory Vacuum Furnace and include examples of real-world heat-treating cycles.

Vacuum Technology focuses on:

  • Vacuum fundamentals
  • Partial pressure
  • Vacuum furnace designs
  • Vacuum furnace operation
  • Pumping systems
  • Vacuum furnace maintenance
  • Vacuum furnace heat treating processes

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, attendees can:

  • Name the advantages of vacuum heat treating compared to conventional atmospheric heat treating
  • List the basic types of vacuum furnaces
  • Explain how vacuum furnaces are insulated, heated, regulated, cooled, and evacuated
  • Explain the basics of operating a vacuum furnace
  • Explain the basic maintenance procedures to maintain a vacuum furnace
  • Discuss the advantages of vacuum heat treating compared to conventional atmospheric heat treating
  • Describe four surface treatments that make use of vacuum technology
  • Describe how vacuum furnaces are used in the heat treating of tool steels, stainless steels, Inconel® 718, titanium and its alloys
  • Be able to design a basic vacuum heat treat cycle for age hardening, solution annealing, and simple brazing.

Course Outline:

  • Comparison of Vacuum and Atmospheric Furnace Processes
  • Pressure Levels in the Vacuum Furnace
  • Types of Vacuum Furnaces
  • Heating Elements for Vacuum Furnaces
  • Insulation in Vacuum Furnaces
  • Gas Quenching
  • Workload Supports
  • Pumping Systems
  • Temperature Controls in a Vacuum Furnace
  • Pressure Controls in a Vacuum Furnace
  • Operation of a Vacuum Furnace
  • Vacuum Carburizing and Vacuum Nitriding
  • Vacuum Heat Treating of Tool Steels, Stainless Steel, and Titanium
  • Vacuum Furnace Cycle Experiments
