NEW VIRTUAL OPTION!
4-Day Virtual Course, Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM-11:45 AM
This virtual only lecture course examines the analysis and control of microstructure and properties in steels, critical for many industries and applications. Microstructure identification and interpretation techniques are delivered via live online instruction, allowing students to build essential knowledge from anywhere. The course focuses specifically on metallographic preparation of steels to reveal microstructure accurately and provides practical skills for interpreting steel microstructures in real-world scenarios.
Students will learn to determine prior austenitic grain size and predict how cooling rates affect resulting microstructure—skills that apply directly to production and quality control challenges. Course content includes identification of Austenite, Ferrite, Pearlite, Bainite (upper and lower), and Martensite (lath and plate), along with explaining their formation and growth mechanisms. Video footage from Lehigh University’s hot stage microscope demonstrates several phase transformations common to steels, providing valuable visual insights in real time.
Students will have direct access to the instructor through question and answer forums for personalized guidance and support.
Prefer Hands-on Learning? An in-person course with full lab experience is also available, including sample preparation, heat treatment, and hands-on metallographic analysis. See the Steel Metallography lecture and lab course, June 1-4, 2026.
