Boronizing (also referred to as boriding) is a case hardening process for metals to improve the wear life and galling resistance of metal surfaces. Boronizing involves diffusing boron into the surface of a metal workpiece where it reacts to form subsurface metal-boride compounds. As boron is diffused into the metal surface, a continuous layer of subsurface metal-boride compound initially forms at the surface. Over time, the layer grows deeper as additional boron continues to enter the surface and diffuse deeper below the surface.
