There are many occasions where it is beneficial for a component to have high strength and wear resistance on its exterior (case) while simultaneously possessing toughness and ductility at the center (core). Carburization is the term used to describe the variety of processes that produce this case/core composite. Carburization is the process of intentionally increasing the carbon content of a component surface by means of diffusion, with the objective of preferentially modifying its mechanical properties. Carburization is most frequently used on steel components, but there are limited applications where carburizing can be used on certain nickel and titanium alloys.
